If Pern had a concept of Hell, Caelen would be dwelling on it. Despite his strength, despite the calm optimism he often had... Only utter damnation could reflect what it was he felt this day. How else could he describe these events? The death of so many, the pain coursing through him that was so intense, when he opened his eyes, he couldn't see straight. The dead weight upon him constricted his lungs, so every breath was harder than the previous.
For the briefest of moments, Caelen wished he was truly dead.
Of course, without Hell, there was no Heaven... and no metaphor of angels would come to mind as a being with golden wings swept down in a halo of light, lifting away his burden. Though his subconscious still screamed for reprieve, for a numbness beyond comprehension, Between where he could forget his pain, the less primal parts of the Candidate's brain that hadn't started shutting down due to lack of oxygen suddenly roaring back to life with acute clarity. Adrenaline from the attack still rushed through his system, bringing him back to the presence with a sharpness that cut through him like a razor.
His brown eyes shifted to Keeliah as she approached, her face coming into a hawk-like focus. His breathing became rapid, despite his ability to fill his lungs again, the boy pale as a sheet. Though he tried to move his good arm to reassure the Redrider, he found it completely useless. Despite all his efforts, he could not even twitch a finger... which started to spread terror through him. His shoulder twitched as he struggled frantically to move a limb that was rapidly losing all of its oxygen.
The candidate was going into neurogenic shock.
Despite oxygen rushing in with his deepened breath, his extremities had suddenly lost their ability to return blood to the heart. With blood pressure dropping, his heart rate was slowly tumbling towards zero, and once again his consciousness began to slip away.
