Auria does not at all look how one might expect for a Lord Holder's daughter. At twelve turns of age she's still quite short, a few inches shy of five feet, but Auria is anything but dainty. Built along sturdy lines, with big hands and feet and strong limbs, she looks more like a blacksmith than nobility. Fittingly, too, because she has been apprenticing under a smith since she was ten turns old, and she has the muscles to prove it. Auria has calluses on her hands and is frequently seen with flushed, pink cheeks and soot on her nose. She loves smithwork, but it's far from the cleanest job. She's come into herself early, already sporting a vaguely hourglass-shaped figure that will only grow more pronounced with age. She's fairly pleased with it, too, although she sometimes laments that her muscles might be more visible if not for the padding on her chest and thighs.
A pretty girl, Auria has a sweet, round face and handsome features. Her grey eyes are large and lined with long lashes, and her hair falls in a dark, chestnut curtain to the middle of her back. Auria is one of those fair-skinned people who always sports a collection of freckles on the bridge of her nose, and adds to it whenever she gets any sun. Her nose is small and button-like, and she has a pair of girlishly-curved lips that seem made for smiling. Auria usually has a happy expression on her face, even if she isn't in the most cheerful mood. It's cute, but take care never to push her buttons too hard. It's almost impossible to tell when she'll snap.
History ::Adventurous . Fun-Loving . Rough and Tumble . Tough . Tomboy . Innocent . Naive
Auria is no meek mouse of a girl. She loves going to new places and meeting new people, tackling every challenge with zeal and never giving up until it is complete, or at least adequate. Her best possible day involves making a new friend, doing something exciting and probably illegal, and milking it for all it's worth. Auria isn't afraid to get dirty or to do some hard work, but she'd best be getting something from the deal. She loves smithing because of the hard work, and because it allows her to create things that she would never be able to make otherwise. She likes the idea of something of hers living on in an object.
If her mother knew how thoroughly her daughter rejected all of her teachings, she would probably faint dead away. Auria will never have a love of fashion or be particularly interested in the polite and proper way to do things. She isn't rude, because she's a decent person, but she couldn't care any less how her posture should look or what she should be doing with her hands when she speaks. They'll probably be gripped around a hammer or else shoved in her pockets to hide the grime, and that's just how it's gonna be. Auria likes the freedom that she has away from her family.
She likes being able to take a second helping of food when she wants it, and she likes hanging out with boys, and she likes admiring other girls sometimes (only filthy lesbians like other girls, her mother would say). But she's not a lesbian. She likes boys too, but not as much, that's all. And only the older ones. The mature, manly ones. However Auria's romantic preferences are, for the moment at least, irrelevant, considering the closest she's ever come to being in a relationship was crushing on this or that girl whenever they passed each other in the hall. She doesn't even know what men's genitals look like; she probably thinks everyones' are exactly the same. So yeah, some things about living in a Weyr are bound to be a bit shocking to her. Hopefully she'll be ready.
A little over twelve turns ago, Auria was born to a Lord Holder and his wife. She was their third legitimate child, and the only daughter, which lead to her not only being the baby of the family, but also their little girl. It was a powerful combination, and in the right hands it could have been used to twist them around her pudgy little fingers completely. Fortunately for everyone involved, Auria was, although admittedly sheltered and doted upon, not the kind of girl to manipulate her parents' fondness of her in such a manner. She had much more interesting things to be doing with her time.Mother :: Aquila
There was a servant boy in their household, a fair-featured child by the name of Rinnian, whom she fairly adored. Despite the four turns separating their ages, she would happily follow him around and lose herself for hours in games with her friend. He was like an older brother to her, one who, unlike her own blood kin, would deign to participate in her games and sneak off on adventures. Then, when Auria was barely six turns old, Rinnian began apprenticing under the tutelage of a smith, and rarely had time to see her any more. Auria was devastated, and although at first she snuck out to see him on the job, she was chased away by the busy crafters and was forced to return home to her mother's dominion.
Thus began the molding of the Lord Holder's daughter, who Lady Aquila was determined to see turned into a perfect young lady. There was to be no more wandering off on "adventures." She would always dress according to her station, and keep an eye on the latest fashions. She must become adept at listening to gossip, and filtering the meaning from what seemed like meaningless chatter. She would never eat everything that was on her plate, for such was a sign of overindulgence unsuited to her. And she was never to socialize with the working class. That is what servants are for.
Needless to say, Auria was at a bit of a crossroads. She didn't want to disobey her mother, but she absolutely hated everything that she was being told to do. She had no interest in picking apart rumours and sitting up straight and wearing frilly clothing. And most of all, she hated not being allowed to speak to the working class, for she knew that was what Rinnian was. It all seemed terribly unfair, and for turns she suffered her loneliness and tightly-controlled activities with a deflated attitude.
Until the day she turned ten.
Ten was the acceptable age for children to be apprenticed. Rinnian had become an apprentice smith at that age. With this hopeful thought in mind, Auria gathered all of her wits about her, shed her poofy frock one morning when she was out of her mother's sight, and disappeared into the Weyr. She was determined not to come back until she had been apprenticed too.
Unfortunately, she discovered, most of the men in the smith's hall wouldn't hear of apprenticing a girl, especially one with no experience or aptitude. She was forced to search elsewhere, and this led her to an isolated smithy where an older woman worked producing fine jewellery. Being apprenticed to the Hold's silversmith wasn't really what she had had in mind — she would have preferred pounding iron. But the woman didn't turn her away out of hand, instead saying that she could visit and watch if she wanted, and after a solid month of sitting for hours a day in the woman's workplace, she was finally allowed to learn.
But no one could know of it. If even one person discovered where she disappeared to for hours at a time, her mother would see to it that she never returned, of this she was certain. So Auria made up elaborate stories to cover her disappearances, sometimes slipping away after lessons or sliding out of the house before anyone else was awake. She didn't even tell Rinnian where she went; she couldn't have, because so hectic were both of their schedules that they hardly had a moment together anymore.
This hadn't exactly been what Auria had hoped for when she became apprenticed, but she found that she liked learning something useful for a change, and she didn't want to disappoint her mentor by leaving her. She found her life to be so busy that she hardly even noticed when Rinnian was Searched a turn and a half into her own apprenticeship, and subsequently whisked far away to Solace Weyr. If her mother noticed how little impact this had on her daughter's activities, she probably attributed it to her own teachings, thinking that perhaps her daughter had finally learned better than to talk to the boy.
Yet, when Auria's teacher announced that she would be relocating to the Weyr a turn later, the girl was determined to accompany her. Nothing that the smith could say or do would dissuade her, short of dropping her as a student, and by now the woman had grown quite used to her. So Auria packed what she could and slipped away with her mentor, leaving only a scrap of vellum in her wake to explain where she had gone. She hoped that her family would understand that she was safe with her teacher, and that she was happy where she was going. Now she has turns of freedom ahead of her, and she means to spend them well.
