[/justify]This was not, Ch'eris reflected, a good place for someone who liked to lurk in shady places to go. It was rather open, and lacking in shade. Still, it was somewhere, and, more to the point, it was somewhere away from people. He could probably find somewhere shady; he was rather good at that sort of thing. Still, he was walking, Orosieth flying a little way ahead, scouting for somewhere they could both rest, and making sure the path ahead was safe for His, which he always did. He insisted upon attending Ch'eris' walks, particularly because he liked to keep the dark-haired Rider company, but aprticularly because he didn't want Ch'eris to get attacked by something, which was extremely useful. Ch'eris just let the large Brown get on with his life and didn't interfere. He didn't particularly want to.
Ch'eris, it doesn't look like it's safe for you to continue walking much longer.
Half-way between interested and surprised, Ch'eris glanced up. The large dragon had landed on a cliff-face a little way away, and was now perching precariously looking down at Ch'eris, who was half way between paying attention and not listening at all.
Still, it was beautiful here, as yet untouched by the fingers of man or dragon, just as it should be. Even though the cheek was dangerous and difficult to ford, it was beautiful, in a natural, elegant way. Ch'eris came here frequently for only that reason. he loved it for how unspoilt and... and uncorrupted it was.
Although it was nearly always better viewed from atop a dragon, where the waters were less likely to decide to suck you in and drown you. Yes, that was always best.
And so, Ch'eris climbed up on to Orosieth's back, and they flew most of the rest of the length of the creek in relative quiet, Ch'eris looking over his dragon's shoulder every so often to scout for a place to land, while Orosieth kept an eye on the air around them to make sure he didn't collide with any passing birds or other dragons (while this was impossible, it was by no means impossible. It hadn't happened yet, and Orosieth and Ch'eris both wanted to make sure it never did - neither wanted that). All in all, the two of them were extremely in-sync.
Don't you think that we'll need some new Candidates for this new Clutch? orosieth piped up, out-of-the-blue. Even though the dragon wouldn't be able to see it, Ch'eris nodded.
"I suppose so, yes. The... oh, what was it called...?" Frowning, he took one hand off Orosieth's neck and snapped his fingers, puzzling over the name of the Clutch. "Shards, I can't remember."
The Chinese Zodiac Clutch, the Brown dragon pitched in. Ch'eris nodded.
"Yes, that was it. There aren't nearly enough Candidates."
Quite. The Brown dragon agreed quietly, staring down at the ground.
