Character Number: 3
Name: Z'marin (zih-MAR-in)
Birth Name: Zimarino (ZIM-uh-REEN-oh)
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Family Ties:
Mother: Harper Arina
Father: M'zon of Blue Both
Lover: Tariv of Green Tarisk
Appearance:
Picture this: A lovely maiden of average height approaches you, her hair is a delicate strawberry blonde mass of ringlets, and her skin is delicately flushed. From what? Nothing in particular, it is merely how her cheeks flush in the sunlight. Her eyes are a dark deep-woods brown, wide and round, her nose is delicately small, coming to a little upturned point at the end. Dappled with freckles, her cheeks are set high on her heart-shaped face. Her mouth is small, but her lips are full and kissable, always with just a hint of pout in them, and her ears are just as delicate as the rest of her.
Zimarino is this woman's son.
Standing at 5'8" at the age of 15, Zim has quite a bit of growing left to his name, but frankly, there are plenty of people in the world who wouldn't mind it if Zim stayed exactly as he was. He has nearly all the features of his mother, and shares her coloration nearly exactly. It is only his gender, it seems, that his father graced him with, aside from large hands and large feet. He is lanky right now, but in time he may still fill out... Or he might remain the delicate boy he is now. Now, don't think that for all that he's slender right now, and for all that he shares his features most clearly with his mother, that Zim is an effeminate young man. No, while he shares his nose and eyes and hair-color and just about everything with his mother, his chin is certainly squarer, his nose a little proportionally larger, as are his ears. His freckles are more haphazard, giving an almost clumsy appearance to whatever formed him, and his eyes, just as dark as his mother's, are always, without fail, filled with mischief.
There's always a little quirk in his smile that screams of all the rules he wants to break, a spring to his lanky step that says "Today, I'm going to cause trouble," but nevertheless, there is nothing malicious about how he looks. Indeed, there's nothing malicious about Zimarino. No, his smile is as genuine as his tendency to cause mischief, and he is as goodnatured as any... And as clumsy.
If you look at his palms, there are bound to be some scrapes, and on his elbow, and his knees, and more often than not, underneath his chin. He is a clumsy youth, and when you combine clumsiness with adventurousness... Well, what do you expect other than him breaking himself all over the damn place. Goodness knows, he's probably broken half of his bones (gross overstatement -- he's only broken his wrist, and also his toe once when he was a kid) and bruised or scraped the other half of his whole body (gross understatement -- There's probably not an inch of flesh on him that hasn't been bruised AND scraped).
In spite of his foolishness and Garanth's tendency to perhaps not be so bright, Zim is not yet marred by Thread, but that day is bound to come, and bound to come soon.
Personality:
Mischievous; Considerate; Goofy; Hopeful; Optimistic; Agreeable; Trouble-Maker; Protective
A goofy trickster, Zim has pranked almost the whole leadership system at least once, and just since he moved to Crystal Waters at the age of ten! He loves to get into trouble, so long as he doesn't get caught, and more importantly, so long as nobody gets hurt, because honestly? This kid wouldn't hurt a fly. He absolutely refuses to let anybody come to harm under his watch, unless they're jerks, then maybe he'll pop 'em one. Which reminds me: he will come to the defense of anyone who he thinks is worthy of it. It could be because of the way he was raised though, born to a family of mutant sympathizers in the not-so-sympathetic Telgar Weyr.
Full of spunk and optimism, Zimarino thinks that things are on the up and up, and always will be. Perhaps one day when he is older, he will realize that that isn't quite how the world works, but right now, Zim is eternally hopeful of a better future, where mutants and traditional dragons can fight side-by-side all across Pern. He's a clever youth, and though he has nearly blinding optimism, Zim does his best to facilitate this change. In fact, Zim frequently uses his pranks as a method to keep things going. Of course, ever since moving to CWW, he hasn't been able to be all that effective, and he was too young really to know how to cause such good change... but, well. He tries.
Aside from this mischievousness, Zim has proven himself to be quite the leader. In times of crisis, it's Zim who immediately takes control, leaping to his feet in order to do what is right. He is especially good at rallying children, and so during Threadfall, more often than not, he is asked to help round up the children to bring to the crechй.
Strangely, there is also... just a little bit of flirtiness in Zim's persona, and when he finds himself attracted to another individual, he is not generally too afraid to mention it. Of course, his heart is set on Tariv, though he hasn't quite figured out just how serious he is about the Greenhandler. It's hard, afterall, to form a relationship with someone so much older than himself. Their relationship was an accident, and would generally be frowned upon even within the Weyr, but it is, and Zim enjoys it, and one day he'll realize that he also needs it.
History:
Born during the middle of a dragon Hatching at Telgar Weyr, Zimarino has always had a life that has been closely attached to dragons. His mother, a Harper, and his father, a Bluerider, always taught him that dragons of all types were beautiful things, but that more than a few things were wrong in Southern Weyr. Other than their sympathy with Solace, M'zon and Arina raised their child as anyone might in Southern Weyr. He always felt a strong affinity with dragons, so much so that he even tried to learn how to fly when he was about two and a half. That didn't get especially far, as his father's dragon, Blue Both caught him by his collar and set him back on the ground from where he had managed to climb to. Now, other than not wanting their son to try and leap off of tall structures again, his parents felt there was nothing wrong with his desire to ride a dragon. They supported dragonriders in the family, and have always been certain that he would grow up to be a great Rider some day.
As he grew older, he began to play benign pranks on friends and family, and eventually branched out to other folk in the Weyr. By the time he was 8 turns old, Zim was well-known to be the one to point fingers at should something seem amiss. Unfortunately, born to the Solace-sympathizing family he was, he eventually began to grow perhaps a little too self-righteous. At 9 and a half turns, he successfully sneaked himself over to the Weyrleader's dragon's sleeping side on the beach, and slowly but carefully painted the hide black. It took quite some time, but having just fought Thread the previous day, and mated with the Gold Queen that very morning, the (admittedly smaller than average) beast slept through Zim's ministrations. If anything, the Bronze enjoyed the paintjob, mistaking it as an oiling by his own rider, not realizing that his rider was still asleep.
Zimarino escaped back home, and thought he would never be caught. But he was. The Bronze's great bellow of anger was heard throughout the Weyr, and the whole Weyr's collective mind was filled with the Bronze's outraged voice, demanding "Who spoiled my hide!?"
Zim's parents looked at their son and asked him if he had been the one guilty, sending out his mother's green firelizard to determine exactly what had been done. The images of the Black-painted Bronze were sent back, and the 'lizard quickly Betweened home once the Bronze had tried to snatch the creature out of the air for comfort food perhaps.
"I didn't do it," Zim had lied, but the paint on his hands and on his clothes suggested otherwise.
His parents faces had been especially grim, but they knew that given the circumstances, that perhaps now was a good time to leave. Quickly enough, they had packed their things, and just as the Weyrleader realized who it was that had probably painted his dragon such an abhorrent hue, they were up and Between.
M'zon and Both had been to Solace long ago, before Zimarino had been born, and though Arina hadn't, she had agreed that that was their haven. They did not know how angry the new Weyrleader would be, but they knew him to be a violent man who gave in frequently to his temper. They feared for their son's life. As dramatic as that might seem, when Arina sent her firelizard back to the Weyr to ask if the man's temper had cooled, they learned with the poor creature's broken leg that no, it had not. And indeed, much of the Weyr had turned against them, having found Arina's correspondences with her family in the land 'twixt Solace and Southern discussing all the things she thought were wrong with the Weyr.
Zimarino is very sorry for what happened, but Arina and M'zon have assured him that they likely would have been discovered before long, and they would rather live here in any case. Before long, Zimarino and his family had been thoroughly welcomed by the Weyr. Over the next couple of turns, Zim slowly began to become disenchanted with his parent's views. Seeing what Maai actually wanted, and learning that people here were actually even more against change and such than Southern was disappointed the mischeivous Zim. It seemed that the Solace Weyrleadership was even more against fun than Southern's. By 11 turns of age, Zim ha decided that neither Weyr was necessarily in the right, but that was about it. The child didn't care too much otherwise. Most of his time was spent exploring, and during that time, around the age of 11, he found a fire-lizard Clutch and Impressed a Green who he named Jedidiah.
Upon his 12th birthday, Zimarino was asked to Stand to the egg. As a Candidate, he watched dragons come and go, and slowly but surely began to feel the first twitches of puberty. He'd already had crushes, and he was already comfortable with the fact that he liked both girls and boys, but he hadn't really felt so... needful when Goldflights affected the whole Weyr. One day, at the admittedly tender age of 13, the whole Weyr seemed especially needy. First thing in the morning, a Green dragon rose, and since Zim was hiking and the flight ended up culminating not too far overhead, Zim ended up pinkfaced by his return home. At midday, Gold Grenth took to the air, and because of the nature of Goldflights, the pubescent teen found himself more red than pink, and with a painful need in his gut (or maybe lower). Come early evening, Jedidiah, likely influenced by Zim's hormones, took off for her own Flight. By this point, slammed by puberty and flight after flight after flight without being sated (no matter what, one's own hand can only handle so much), Zim completely lost his mind. He found himself MEWLING at a Wher-handler's door.
"Let me in, baby," Zim's recently broken voice managed. Tariv was understandably horrified, but when Tarisk decided that it was her turn to Run as Jedidiah's flight ended, Tariv pulled the youth into his rooms and with Jedidiah choosing a wild wher, ended up making (decidedly rough) love to the 13 turn old. A few hours later, both realized what they had done. Zim didn't care, not seeing the problem as many youths would fail to, but Tariv was disgusted with himself. Unfortunately for him, Zim became rather attached to the gnarled looking man, and they've been close ever since in a strange brother-lover relationship.
At the very Hatching that Zimarino had lost his virginity during the creation of, Zimarino became Z'marin. Garanth came from one of the first eggs, but he was among the last to Impress, staring at the Candidates as if they were aliens. Finally, he came before Zim.
/No one's able t'tell me. Wot'm I s'posta do?/ the Blue asked hopefully, tilting his head, his words slow and simple and boyish.
"You're supposed to Impress someone, silly," Zim said.
/They all been tellin' me THAT. But wot's Impression?/
"You don't know? Huh. Well, it's kinda complicated really... You're supposed to pick out your absolute favorite person in the whole room and choose them as yours, and then your mind will be kinda mixed up with theirs."
/But I dun wanna be someone else./
"Not like that, it's like... best friends, you know? Or a mom and a kid? Did you try and as Grenth?"
/...No. That's a good idea./
Suddenly, the Blue looked to understand. /Ohhhhh. Kay. You're Mine then, kay? You're Garanth's Mine. That was really comp-uh-cated. Can we get something yummy?/
Well. That settled it then. Garanth is a decidedly stupid dragon, and they barely made it through Weyrling Training, but they have graduated, and they have graduated successfully. Garanth is also determinedly homosexual, a strange trait, but one that does not bother Z'marin so much as it bothers other male dragons. Garanth has a tendency, you see, to join flights not to chase the female, but after one male or another. He also firmly believes that cuddling is sex. Just so you know.
Now, sadly, during Weyrlinghood, Jedidiah did die in Threadfall, but fortunately, Tariv was there to comfort Z'marin. This may be where Garanth gets the idea that cuddling is sex, you see, because Z'marin and Tariv broke a very serious Weyrlinghood rule and had sex for the second time. In order to help Garanth understand what happened (Z'marin and Tariv are both very sorry for what happened, they tried to explain to Garanth that they were cuddling... Didn't work so well.
