[/justify]Rinnian was bored.
Well, Rinnian was often bored, but recently he had been especially so. Since the tragedy that was Maai's assassination, security at Solace Weyr had been going a little overboard. There would be no touching for Grenth's clutch, and the candidates were forbidden to stray very far. The invasion of an assassin from Southern had proved that no one, even those asleep in their weyrs, was safe from the threat. In practice, this meant that even more than just remaining in the Weyr, the candidates preferably would remain in their barracks, the kitchens, and the bathing pools. And Rinnian was not thrilled.
The fair-haired young man was not exactly what anyone would call good at following directions. Who were these people to tell him that he had to stay in the barracks with the other candidates? Why would some assassin from Souther Weyr want to attack a candidate, anyway? Loath to admit it as he was, Rinnian was a sixteen-turn-old boy without a dragon to call his partner. He had no strategic importance to Solace yet. Southern would gain no tactical advantage by killing him, and even if they were as bad as the worst rumors that festered in Solace, he assumed the enemy would be smart enough to realize that murdering candidates was a pretty useless endeavor.
With that logic in mind, surely no one would be able to fault him for taking a nighttime stroll?
A light sleeper at the best of times, Rinnian was having particular trouble lately, what with Grenth's constant mourning in his head. He was pretty sure the entire Weyr was growing quickly sick of hearing can't follow over and over again, and work and sanity all over the place was suffering because of it. What a relief it would be when this clutch had hatched, and Grenth could finally join her rider again. (And maybe this clutch would be the one where he Impressed, eh? Well, maybe.)
He crept out of his bed as the other candidates slept, some soundly and others in dreamy turmoil. The beach would probably be nice right about now... quiet, dark, cool. Yes, that's where he would go. Rinnian glanced around, making sure no one was around to give him away as he sneaked towards freedom, and then he shuffled his way closer to the door.
