The Hatching was over. Deaths, injuries, insanity. Grenth was gone, and Mairin and Rekhath were able to take their position as Weyrwoman without the daunting voice of Grenth following them everywhere. As far as S'rus could tell, the remaining Candidates had slept the better part of the last sevenday. S'rus had slept an awful lot himself. But now it was time to settle back into routine.
S'rus sighed and settled into his paperwork, much of it having been neglected in the final sevendays before the Hatching. He looked through it slowly, and by the time morning was through, he'd gotten through about... a fifth of it. If he was lucky. But the last piece he got to was an important one. And a belated one. A girl had moved into the Weyr, and though the memo was fairly short and fairly detail-free, he learned her name, and her approximate age. She was between 11 and 13, roughly, the memo had said, which meant she was either almost old enough to be a Candidate, or definitely old enough. They could have used more Candidates at the Hatching. They could always use them. The girl hadn't reported to him, so S'rus had a sinking feeling that the girl wasn't staying. He hoped it was just ignorance to the fact that the Weyr, in general, just kinda... let people be Candidates at a certain age.
S'rus stood and decided to go find this girl, Auria, before he did anything else. She came, it said, with a Smith woman, and so it was to the Smithy he went. When he got there, he asked after her, and was soon directed to an elderly woman working on jewelry. Before long, she was directing him to the girl's room. It was her day off, the woman had explained, and she didn't keep tabs on where the girl went, so his best bet was to check her room, and so to his room he went. He had confirmed her age with the old woman, and now he knew for sure that he needed to bring her into Candidacy, if she so pleased.
He smiled brightly when he came to her door, and knocked hopefully. Hopefully she was there, and not running around somewhere else. He put one hand on his hip, unwittingly looking somewhat dashing. Well, as dashing as an average looking fellow can look. He waited patiently, and knocked once more, just in case she was there and hadn't heard. Nevermind that she likely hadn't even had time to get up if she was there. But he was impatient today. He wanted to rebuild the Candidacy roster up as fast as possible. Neither Rekhath, nor her Copper friend were ready to Rise as far as he knew, but just in case, it was always better safe than sorry.
