There's nothing quite like a nice walk on the beach to soothe the nerves, is there Mine?
The lanky gold moved over the hot summer sand at a slow, easy pace, so as not to tire the much smaller woman who walked at her side. Her eyes whirled a slow blue-green, mirroring the rhythmic motions of the azure waters as they crested onto the beach. Her rounded wings were furled loosely at her sides, and her tail swept behind her in wide arcs as she walked, occasionally brushing the ground and leaving a small streak in the sand. She had been eager to escape the confines of the Weyr, and to distance herself from her mother, who had recently clutched and was more ornery than usual.
It's much more pleasant out here.
"You'd say that about anywhere we were, so long as it was away from Grenth," the brown-haired woman replied. She snuck a glance at the reddish-gold dragon, who looked deliberately unperturbed. "But yes, it is very nice today. We might even go for a swim."
Mairin shaded her eyes against the sun's glare and gazed out over the beach. They were nearing the edge of the cove; she could see the cliff face curving forward to plunge into the water, hemming in the stretch of sand on which they walked. This area of the cove was rarely frequented, and as a result stones and debris littered the sands increasingly as they walked on. She kept half an eye open for interesting stones or shells, thinking that she might take one back to her weyr, and still she almost missed the collection of smooth ovoids, half-buried as they were in the sand.
"Rekhath! Look at this."
Stopping near them, Mairin crouched down on her heels for a closer look at what had caught her attention. The dragon stopped as well, and lowered her muzzle down to sniff curiously at the diminutive collection of eggs. Because eggs they were — tiny, multi-hued firelizard eggs, perfectly disguised among the stones and driftwood. Mairin wondered why any creature would lay her eggs so nearby the Weyr, and thought that this stretch of beach must be even less frequented than she had first imagined.
Eventually she stood up again, not wanting to disturb the nest, but before she could move off again a noise from Rekhath caused the woman to stop. Mairin slowly turned her head to look at the dragon, bemusement crossing her features.
Rekhath was humming.
Initially, her thoughts flashed to Grenth's clutch back at the Weyr. Was it hatching already? But Mairin reminded herself that the Weyrqueen had clutched less than a sevenday ago. Her eggs could not be hatching yet. The young woman looked back down at the collection of tiny eggs at her feet, realization dawning. One of the white-ish eggs gave a small twitch.
Human-darlings, Rekhath sang suddenly, come to the beach. There are firelizard eggs hatching, but mind your step once you get here. I shall be cross if you trod on them.
