Character Number: 3
Name: Rujin
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Wing: n/a
Status: Every day he's shufflin'.
Appearance: He's a lucky one with his height, crowning at 6'' even. Of course, he doesn't really view himself as lucky, with everyone else his age running around somewhere in the five foot area. He feels he sticks out like a sore thumb, just like his father, who is a giant both wide and tall, and his mother, who is no little lady either. He's fortunate enough not to to look like a large puppy with ears and paws too big for him, but he's still a bit gangly looking, in that awkward phase of puberty where his chin sprouts a few russet hairs, fuzzy and soft. Rujin stands out like a torch in the night, his bright orange hair wild and shaggy, freckled face tan and leathered from the sun. His hands are rough and calloused from handling rope and line on his father's ships, long appendages lined with sleek young muscle. Due to an incident when he was younger, (one that involved smacking face first into the deck of a ship) his upper teeth are a bit crooked, having grown in that way, and he's missing one canine tooth.
He has a generally pointy looking face, with a sharp nose and chin and high cheekbones. If he didn't eat as much as he did Rujin would probably look quite gaunt, his skin already stretched over his frame rather tautly. His voice has a needling quality to it, and it's very easy for Rujin to set someone on edge if he just pitches it correctly.
Personality: Rujin's a scamp. Always more interested in flirting and teasing than he was in actually getting down to work, his most recent years have been smattered with stolen kisses and broken hearts. It wasn't until he was caught with a young lady in the throes of passion that serious attention was paid to Rujin's flirtations, and his father took the time to keep his son in line. After that, Rujin was almost always sent out to sea to work and fish, rarely getting time at home to fraternize. Eventually his mind settled into the pattern and he began to take his role seriously. He's friendly by nature, and a close-talker, always leaning in to capture someone's attention. Never without words or a lopsided smile, or an arm around someone's shoulders. He's used to touching people for any minor reason, both parents having been touchy and personable. He is a sensitive little fool, though, easily wounded and not overly clever in anything that ISN'T dealing with people. He knows enough to keep himself out of trouble, but he still burns himself every once in a while.
Rujin's is a social intelligence. He understands why people work the way that they do, and it's fairly easy for him to grasp emotional reasoning or motivations. This allows him to be manipulative, using whatever charm or glower he needs to get his way, if things aren't already heading in that direction.
History: Rujin grew up around the water and the sea, and earned his sealegs before he could even rightly walk. He was a father's son, always traipsing about in his dad's massive shadow. His mother's dearest wish was for Rujin to find himself a nice girl and settle down to procreate and breed more little gingers, but unfortunately her son never stayed with anyone for longer than a few months, and never expressed a true interest in marriage, or children, for that matter. In fact, Rujin never seemed to express much of an interest in anything other than his craft and bedding whatever woman would have him, much to the heartbreak and dismay of his mother.
The voyage that cost him his tooth nearly cost him much more. It had been a violent sea for the entire journey, and though Rujin was a hardy lad and could intuitively understand the ocean and its whimsies, he was also overly confident in his abilities. When a man was tossed overboard, Rujin immediately dove in after his comrade, acting on instinct fueled with his own sense of indomitable immortality. The man was rescued without much difficulty - he was still within his senses enough to grasp the rope that had been thrown to him - Rujin was almost a lost cause, having flung himself far out into the water in his eagerness to be a hero. He almost drowned that day, had it not been for his father fishing him out of the sea.
Once he got home there was a pleasant surprise waiting for the weary young man. Searchdragons had never seemed to show much interest in him before, but now there was a dark, inky blue that couldn't keep his whirling eyes off of Rujin. His mother resisted - her only son! But Rujin's father, having witnessed what he had not even 48 candlemarks before, allowed his boy to be spirited away to the Weyr. It would no doubt be a safer life for someone who would leap headfirst into a churning ocean.
He is well aware that he is on the very cusp of Impressionable age, and that the coming clutch at Solace will probably be his first and last chance. He seems to think he'll stick around the Weyr though, perhaps sweet-talking someone into purchasing him a wher to bond to if the whole 'being a Rider' thing doesn't work out.
Family: His father, Vuron, is a fisherman.. His mother, Halla, is an accomplished basket weaver and creates beautiful blanket and tapestry masterpieces on her loom. No siblings.
