Grenth's penance was almost up.
/Can't follow, can't follow, can't follow./
Her voice was but a whistling whisper, the wind in a cave, incessant, and nearly ignorable, but not quite. She hadn't left to eat even once in the remaining sevendays since Maai's death, and her cheeks were beginning to sink in. Her once lovely pale gold hide was graying horribly, and her eyes whirled a constant soft gray. A lovely shade, really, but not so much in a dragon's eye, indicating emotional pain. She hadn't moved herself physically in five days, and she was beginning to get sores on the side of her hide that layed motionless on the sand. Her chin was scratched and greened from its constant contact with the sand, as well. She was a sick dragon, nobody could deny it, but beyond her physical problems that had arisen, her broken mind shone like shattered glass.
/Can't follow, she mumbled half-heartedly.
A movement caught her attention, and for the first time in nearly a sevenday, the innert Gold sat up quickly. Nobody had been near her since just after Maai's death, nobody had dared. Who dared now? Was it her murderer, come to get her children?
/Can't... there, follow, you?/ came the acrid anger loudly throughout the Weyr, waking many-a-wher in the midst of their daytime sleep-cycle. In the mid-afternoon, the Weyr stopped, her endless litany having changed, and having changed loudly.
/You follow where you? WHERE you, WHERE you, where, where, where! You, monster, yes, where? You, monster, killer, horror! You, horror, you horror! Where are you!?/
Another movement, bright red, bright gold. /There, you! There! There you pitiful, awful, forgotten thing, yes, you, kill you, rip you apart clean teeth with broken monster bones!/ Slowly her coherence began to coalesce. After so many days of two words and two words only, sentences were a struggle to form. But here they were, as her memory was jogged by fear. /Beast, horrid beast, you come for me and my children, this I see, this I see! My Maai, my Maai, avenge I shall! I shall! I shall! Can't follow yet, my Maai, can't follow yet. Oh my sweet, oh my Maai, come soon I will, come soon I will, but avenge first!/
More movement, from another side, more movement. An instinctive hum rolled up into her throat, but she tore the hum from herself and screamed. They were coming, but danger was here!
/Oh my sweet, my Maai, they come, they come, they come! Can't follow yet, must stay, must stay, trapped, trapped, trapped with a monster! My children, coming, can't follow, with a monster!/
The eggs were hatching, yet there was an intruder? The Gold glared around the cavern, glared at any who entered, roaring at those who hovered anxiously by the entrance. They weren't allowed, they weren't allowed, they weren't allowed....
Only Rekhath and Encipeth, working together, were able to calm Grenth.
/For your children, Grenth, for our children. Let them in, let the Candidates Stand, let your Riders enter to search for this intruder, Encipeth said softly to Grenth. /Stay with us for now, Grenth, and let us in,/ he said soothingly.
Let them in, let them in, let them in.
/Monsters! Beasts! They are everywhere!/
Let them in, let them in, let them in.
/There aren't any monsters, Grenth. We'll find them if there are. Let us in./ Rekhath.
Let them in, let them in, let them in.
Let them in, Grenth.
Maai.
/Yes, yes, enter, but touch not, don't touch, kill you I will. Hurt my children, I will hurt you, hurt more than death could, more than death, more than death, can't follow. I will take your heads and use them as my resting place, I will tear your limbs from your bodies can't follow, should you fail to find this monster, this monster, can't follow, can't follow, can't follow yet!/ More movement, more movement, the Gold's eyes darted around the Sands as she began at last to let Candidates and a few select riders in onto the Sands, and she screamed anxiously at the spectators who decided to watch.
Another movement, the Gold twitched.
